Get Involved with "Orchard Wharf"

Orchard Aug 18Joining The MRC is a great way to learn from the range and wealth of knowledge of the other members, and getting directly involved in one of the layout groups is an even better way to learn and enjoy your membership.

We may not have a layout group that exactly matches your specific modelling interests, but most of layout teams have people with a wide range of tastes and experience, that come together because of the enjoyment of being involved in a collaborative project. Our new EM gauge layout is no exception.

The group includes some experienced EM gauge modellers, combined with experienced modellers who have never worked to this gauge/scale combination before, those interested in the electronic control systems and some with much less experience. All are playing an active role in designing and building the layout.

In July we did a lot of brainwork: looking at films, digging in archives, measuring the reactance (or was it reluctance?) of uncouplers. August has brought very hot weather and a renewed focus on the selection and arrangement of scenic items – buildings, ships, chimneys etc – to create a layout that draws in the viewer and conceals as far as possible the ruses required to allow trains to come and go.

We’re still selecting rolling stock, fettling couplings, and there is work in progress towards a possible 3d model of the characteristic ‘quint-art’ coaching stock used on the Liverpool Street and Stratford suburban services.

So now is an ideal time to get involved. The group meets on most Friday evenings*, from 6.30 to 9.30 at Keen House, and any member is welcome to join this and/or any other layout group. If you would like to find out more, please speak to Ben Weiner or John Jesson, the layout leaders, on any club night or This email address is being protected from spambots.
