As well as contributing to our Club layouts, many of our members have their own projects at home – and here’s an example of just one of them. “Golden Mile” is inspired by the 2mm Scale Association’s golden jubilee competition this year and a chance purchase of some wagons at a deep discount. The requirements are tough – a scenic section no bigger than 60cm by 9.42 inches – and it has to be complete by June this year.

The Golden Mile is the local name for the business and industrial area along the Great West Road in west London, and this layout represents a short section of the Brentford branch as it passes under the A4 in a ‘what might have’ with a local passenger service in operation between Brentford and the mainline at Southall, and the southern end of freight sidings receiving aggregates from the west country, and taking waste off to incineration.

Set in the modern day, it’s a first attempt at 2mm finescale modelling rather than 4mm scale. Some of the techniques are similar, others more tricky. There is a history of the build on twitter here https://twitter.com/mile2mm – please follow the layout for more updates between now and June.

It made its first outing as a layout under construction at the Festival of British Railway Modelling last weekend in Doncaster.
